TITLE: Online Graphic Novel/Sequential Art Authoring Tools for Therapeutic

Storytelling

TECHNOLOGY AREAS: Human Systems

OBJECTIVE: Develop user-friendly authoring tools to help Service Members express combat-related experiences through personal narratives in a graphic novel/sequential art format that will enable them to process their memories and emotions through healthy, constructive activities.

DESCRIPTION: Art Therapy and narrative are both useful techniques for helping individuals traumatized by life experiences process memories and channel emotions through a healthy outlet. Narratives related to experiences do not necessarily have to be veridical representations of history. A good example of channeling emotion and memories related to combat experiences into storytelling is Joe Haldeman’s, “Forever War” published in 1974 and winning both the Hugo and Nebula Awards in which Haldeman translates experiences and feelings related to the Vietnam War into a Science Fiction theme. Graphic novels/sequential art have rich traditions of high-quality artwork and rich storytelling related to combat experiences as exemplified in the 1951 series, “Frontline Combat” and the 1966 series, “Blazing Combat”. Considered political in their day for their stark portrayals of war, both are now considered hallmarks of the genre both stylistically and in the emotionality of their content. Likewise the recent work of Garry Trudeau has chronicled the road to recovery following combat injuries with both humor and sensitivity. The current effort is aimed at providing authoring toolkits to allow Service members and Veterans to relate their own stories via a graphic novel/sequential art format of equally high quality.

The goal is to create web-based software with a simple interface that assists in both storytelling and graphical content creation that can relate experiences either directly or metaphorically. While providing simple-to-use authoring tools, the results should have the look and feel of a professional product and provide the flexibility of telling a wide range of stories. For example, content creation could relate to modern combat, historical combat, science fiction, or fantasy. But, the authoring tools MUST allow the user to draw from a library of artwork, icons, and other templates to assist them in telling a story related to combat experiences. The software tools must assist the user at every opportunity to tell a story and the end result should be a professional looking narrative comparable to the best graphic novels/sequential art. The tool should also include pre-prepared examples of full-stories that can be used for inspiration and guidance. Innovation is key to this program and software must be designed to inspire, encourage, and guide users in the development of their own storylines and to guide them to additional resources if they are interested in exploring and/or obtaining personalized support and services.

Proposals MUST reflect team expertise in developing professional narrative, especially web comics and/or graphic novels/sequential art. Preference will be given to teams who demonstrate expertise in content development, military expertise, and psychological health. One of the goals of this program is to determine the best way to use these narratives tools. Can they be a stand-alone resource? Can they be used as an aid to formal therapy? Is this approach safe and effective? Therefore, teams must be well-rounded.

Innovation in the program is seen in the areas of user-interface design, flexibility of tool to tell a wide-range of stories, and the quality of the artwork and storytelling produced by the tool. Metrics for success should be clearly specified and should take into account both usability and psychological health issues.

PHASE I: Develop a conceptual design and model key elements for art therapy and narrative authoring tools that will allow service members to tell their own stories related to deployment experiences in a simple, intuitive Web Browser based graphic novel/sequential art format. In preparation for Phase II, develop a robust methodology with clear metrics for assessing usability, user acceptance, and effectiveness of the web tool. It is important to note that there will be no human use testing in Phase I.

Test key hypotheses by developing, constructing, and testing prototype subsystems. Determine best methods for using the tool (online, integral part of therapy, or both). Phase I deliverables should include a Final Phase I report that includes: (1) a detailed design of the art therapy and storytelling therapy authoring tools with storyboards for user interface and design at a minimum, (2) experimental results from such toolsets, and (3) a Phase II plan.

PHASE II: Develop, demonstrate, and validate a proof of concept design of the web based art therapy and storytelling therapy authoring tools. Produce a prototype art therapy and storytelling therapy authoring tools on a standalone system with the expectations of integrating into a network deployable web based health care system to be identified at the Phase III timeframe. The required deliverable for Phase II will include: the prototype system, demonstration and testing of the prototype system, and a Final Report. The Final Report will include (1) a detailed design of the prototype art therapy and storytelling therapy authoring toolsets, (2) the experimental results from such toolsets, and (3) a plan for Phase III.

PHASE III: In Phase III, delivery of mature web based art therapy and storytelling therapy authoring tools that will allow service members to tell their own stories related to deployment experiences in a simple, intuitive Web Browser based graphic novel/sequential art format that would be delivered and integrated into a military medical health system would be expected.

Potential dual use of the toolset could be applied to the commercial medical health services for as useful techniques for helping “non-military” individuals traumatized by life experiences process memories and channel emotions through a healthy outlet. Tools can also be used to develop educational tools for children to include the development of language skills and narrative ability.

Defense Department to Use Comic Books as 'Art Therapy'

Carvings in ancient Egyptian temples paired pictures and words to illustrate the great battles of their days. Japanese wood block prints detailed massive samurai battles. Medieval European tapestries used sequential art to commemorate the combat between Normans and native Englishmen.

Throughout human history, people have used comic book-like art forms to document the horror and valor of war, and now American defense scientists think continuing that tradition by producing online comic books could help veterans overcome post-traumatic stress disorder.

On Tuesday, April 26, DARPA, the Defense Department's research wing, put out a call for "user-friendly authoring tools to help service members express combat-related experiences through personal narratives in a graphic novel/sequential art format." They believe that by producing their own personal comic books, servicemen and women can confront their wartime stresses in a productive and healthy way.

"Art therapy and narrative are both useful techniques for helping individuals traumatized by life experiences process memories and channel emotions through a healthy outlet," reads the online Defense Department solicitation. "The goal is to create web-based software with a simple interface that assists in both storytelling and graphical content creation that can relate experiences either directly or metaphorically. While providing simple-to-use authoring tools, the results should have the look and feel of a professional product and provide the flexibility of telling a wide range of stories. For example, content creation could relate to modern combat, historical combat, science fiction, or fantasy."

Called the "Online Graphic Novel/Sequential Art Authoring Tools for Therapeutic Storytelling," the finished product, as outlined in the document, would allow veterans to go online, mix premade images and icons with user-generated art, and produce a finished comic book the confronts their personal relationship to war either realistically or in a sci-fi/fantasy form.

The DARPA product request goes into unusually nerdy detail for a government document, mentioning Joe Haldeman's novel "The Forever War," the comic strip "Doonesbury," and the comic books "Frontline Combat" and "Blazing Combat" as inspirations for the program.

The fighting was furious — and entirely one-sided. While on patrol in eastern Afghanistan’s Paktia province in December 2002, paratroopers from the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division had taken a wrong turn and blundered straight into one of Paktia’s isolated villages. The villagers weren’t Taliban or even Taliban sympathizers. But they were heavily armed — and determined to keep the Americans out.

AK-47–armed men opened fire from inside mud huts and behind stone walls. The American commander, recognizing his mistake, ordered his men not to shoot back. Bullets pinged off the doors and roofs of unarmored Humvees. Still, the Americans held their fire. The paratroopers’ restraint, even in the face of mortal danger, was the most incredible thing that one 26-year-old Air Force controller had ever seen.

Eight years later, Tech. Sgt. Phoebus Lazaridis was back in Afghanistan on his third combat tour. He lived alongside soldiers in remote outposts, coordinating air strikes against the Taliban. By 2010, Lazaridis had seen as much war as any American combatant, and had a Bronze Star — pinned on his chest by U.S. House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi in 2009 — to prove it.

It was on that third deployment, to Kunar province north of Paktia, that Lazaridis turned to a childhood passion, in an effort to understand himself and his war experiences. He began drawing comics again, years after the aspiring artist had put down his pens and pencils to join the Air Force. Lazaridis’ unpublished graphic novel Silver Shields, set during the ancient Greek invasion of Afghanistan more than two millenniums ago, is a metaphor for his — and America’s — involvement in the “Graveyard of Empires.”

Today the Pentagon is looking to expand on personal projects such as Lazaridis’. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency — the military’s fringe-science wing — has launched an initiative meant to encourage U.S. troops returning from war to tell their own stories in comics form. They’ve given the the program a cumbersome, miljargon name, “Online Graphic Novel/Sequential Art Authoring Tools for Therapeutic Storytelling.” But the goal is fascinating: to help troops “process their memories and emotions” in a “graphic novel/sequential art format.”

If it survives Darpa’s sometimes fickle management process, the war-comics initiative could capitalize on, and even expand, a deep but mostly unheralded groundswell of comics written for, by and about veterans of the Afghan war. But the program also risks exposing the public to some of the ugliest emotional vestiges of the decade-old conflict.

Comics as Therapy

More than most recent conflicts, the Afghanistan war has been steeped in comics — a truth that Darpa seems to recognize.

Consider, for example, the art slideshow at the top of this post’s first page. The 10 pages recounting the Paktia ambush were drawn by acclaimed comics artist Greg Scott after I, a graphic novelist in my own right, dragged him to Kunar last year so he could see the war for himself.

Our work-in-progress, The ‘Stan, is a comic book about comic books about Afghanistan, featuring Lazaridis, his Silver Shields and other sequential art. And, like the Darpa program, it’s a kind of therapy for veteran troops (and reporters) seeking to understand their time at war.

“Art therapy and narrative are both useful techniques for helping individuals traumatized by life experiences process memories and channel emotions through a healthy outlet,” Darpa notes in its solicitation for the comics initiative. The research agency wants industry to produce “web-based software with a simple interface that assists in both storytelling and graphical content creation.”

“Content creation could relate to modern combat, historical combat, science fiction or fantasy,” the solicitation continues. “But, the authoring tools must allow the user to draw from a library of artwork, icons and other templates to assist them in telling a story related to combat experiences.”

The end result would be “instant” DIY comics that can be “integrated into a military medical health system.” Exactly how the comics will be integrated is still evolving. “One of the goals of this program is to determine the best way to use these narrative tools,” Darpa says.

Technically, it’s not a huge challenge. Commercial comics-creation software has been around for years. And thousands of creators publish web-based autobiographical and nonfiction comics every day.

Moreover, the U.S. Navy has already thought hard about how comics can help its sailors deal with combat stress. One result is The Docs, a Navy-published comic book meant to expose new medical corpsmen to some of the sights and feelings they might experience in combat. (See above.)

For the Pentagon, one risk in asking troops to create their own comics is that the results might clash with the military’s PR efforts. Thousands of military public-relations professionals work long hours putting the most appealing spin possible on the war effort … and on the reactions of individual troops to their time in combat. If the Darpa graphic-novel project works as advertised, it could produce stories that one Marine-turned-comics-creator describes as “very depressing.”

“Ready to Kill Anybody“

Robert LeHeup, now 29, joined the Marine Corps in 2000. He did two combat tours in Afghanistan — in Kandahar in 2001 and a stint in Kabul two years later. Today, several years out of the Corps, LeHeup (pictured above) is a Columbia, South Carolina, filmmaker and comics writer whose subject matter almost always deals with the war, whether directly or metaphorically.

In fact, it was during his violent, chaotic tour in Kabul that LeHeup decided to start creating comics. “The idea that I might not last made it so I had to get a legacy going,” he says.

His first completed graphic-novel script was an epic tale of revenge and self-discovery starring an amnesiac assassin named Odin. It’s not hard to see how much of himself LeHeup invested in the assassin character. “He’s trying to save the last vestige of hope,” LeHeup says of Odin.

“Everything I now write has to do with struggle,” LeHeup says. That’s something with which he’s intimately familiar — even today, years removed from the battlefield. Seeing and inflicting so much death and destruction during his time in Afghanistan transformed LeHeup in ways he’s not always proud of. “It was both one of the proudest things I’ve ever done and one of the most humbling things I’ve ever done,” he says of his war service. “Humbling because of what a straight-up horrible person I was, ready to kill anybody.”

Last year, LeHeup wrote a two-page autobiographical comic (Page 1 and Page 2), drawn by Robin Everett-McGuirl, that illustrates this duality. True and therapeutic, the black-and-white comic is precisely the kind of thing Darpa apparently has in mind — and also exactly the sort of thing that could embarrass the military if the comics leaked into general circulation.

Turns out, it’s one thing to hear or read about brutal combat and its psychological effects on combatants. It’s quite another to see them represented graphically. That’s a distinction LeHeup appreciates. “Ninety percent of perception is visual,” he points out.

Still, LeHeup thinks the graphic-novels-as-therapy project could help troops who might otherwise resist discussing their experiences. “People are not going to want to write poetry,” he says. “Comics might be dorky, but they’re cool dorky.” But the Pentagon will need to impose rigorous structure — “a class or something,” LeHeup says — to make sure troops actually finish their comics.

After all, not all combat vets will be as motivated to create comics as Lazaridis, LeHeup, Scott and myself.

Just don’t expect miracles from comics or any other method of teasing out troops’ stories, the former Marine cautions. “You can trim those bitches down,” LeHeup says of traumatic wartime memories. “But once it’s taken root, you can’t pull it up. You’d have to lose clumps of memory — good luck!”

Heroes Fallen Studios Inc. News Updates.

Hello everyone, for all of you that take a interest in what we here at Heroes Fallen Studios Inc. do, I would like to say that this month has been some what of a whirlwind month for us here. As I am sure many of you are aware we did two comic conventions this month alone the first one being Heroes Con in Charlotte NC put on by Shelton Drum, And the second one was in DC at the DC comic con put on by Brett Carass. But the most exciting things that have happened this month are things I am still unable to go completely into detail about. Lets just say that the Graphic Novel "Untold Stories From Iraq & Afghanistan" & Heroes fallen Studios is getting a lot of attention. Certain things are in the works, if and when they go trough I will be able to share with everyone the details. All I can say right now if they do pan out it will be very big for Heroes fallen Studios in its ability to support our troops!

I am Navy Gold Star Mom of EOD1 Joseph Adam McSween , KIA April 6, 2007 in Hawijah, Kirkuk, Iraq.
On June 15, 2011 I was on my way to Morris, Illinois for the Illinois Freedom Run Event held at the Middle Eastern Conflicts Walls, while driving through Coffee County, Tennessee toward Nashville. There was a very bad rain storm and my car hydroplaned from the west bound lane of I- 24 to the east bound lane and a quarter of a mile off the interstate into some trees. I am ok accept I have to have surgery on my left ankle , however, my car was totaled and I have only liability insurance because my car was eleven years old and paid for, I now do not have a car. I am on disability so I do not have the income to buy another car. I do not have any family to help me out so all I know to do is put my information out for all, incase there just may be some one or group that might could help me. I do not own anything that I could sell or use to get any kind of load nor do I have the income to make loan payments. I do not event draw enough money a month to pay for all of my medication. The volunteer work I do and the events I go to, to honor my son and others is what get me through each day and with out a car I will be confined to my apartment. So I hope one of your groups or maybe some other group or person you may know of will be able to help get another car for me. It is very hard for me to send out this request, but I have to do something and there are two answers by sending this request, yes or no, however, if I don't send out the request there is only one answer which is no.

I have sent this email to many in hopes that you will also send it out to any group that you know might be able to help me. Thanks to all of you for your help.

I just got off the phone with Mrs Mcsween, we spoke for nearly an hour. I am fully comfortable in helping this patriot and Gold Star parent. We dont just help the troops here we are about the families as well! Lets see what we can do to help Mrs McSween get a new car or even a good used car that is safe and road worthy . I am sure we all know enough people that we can make this happen. So lets get to work give some suggestions . If someone here knows someone that has a decent car that they were looking to sell why not offer it as a gift to this Gold Star mom so that she can continue to do the work she does as a volunteer to support the military her son proudly gave his life for!

DC COMIC CON UPDATE FROM HEROES FALLEN STUDIOS!

Okay for those of you that are interested here is what happened at DC comiccon today. We got up at 5:00am to head out to the show we arrived at 8:30 am. We did our setup at the table. Before the show opened we got a chance to speak to some of the other creators their which was cool. The best part of it for me that morning was having time to actually talk to my friend Larry Hama . He shared some personal stories with me from his time in Vietnam . As Larry is a Vet himself. That to me was the best part of the morning. Larry is not only an amazing writer and artist but a wonderful human being as well. I salute you Larry Hama ! Well the doors opened at 10:00 at first I thought the show was going to be a little slow but it was not long before it started to boom! Well We had a really good show today and actually wound up selling 12 books 2 prints a full donation jar and 15 raffle tickets. We handed out 25 comp books to Active duty military , We were interviewed by a local journalist, and approached by two companies interested in what we are doing to support the troops. The winner of the raffle got a 16x20 print of our promo Advertisement for the book we put out last year signed by me and Larry Hama, also a signed GN with Michael Kellar,Official Spokesman Nick Jones AKA John Stewart ,Larry Hama, and myself. Also a signed autographed picture from our other Official Spokes person Brian Krause aka Leo from hit TV series Charmed. The winner was Damien Brennan from Maryland who drove down for the show. I got a chance to meet and talk to SL Gallant who presently works on GI Joe as an artist and he may be helping us out with a pin-up for volume two. We also meet with the creators of Ninjas VS Vampires comic and movie and met Daniel Ross AKA Kyle from the movie! So it was a really good day folks. Also hung a little bit with my good friend Louis Small Jr. (Of Vampirela Fame)who is doing a pin-up for Volume II. As usual I am always working behind the scenes so I may have some things in development from some of the folks I spoke to today. I will update as they happen or not.We were also approached by a local comic blogger to learn about our organization. And Again as usual The greates part of the day was meeting all the military men and women who so proudly give their all for all of us! God Bless our troops. And on a final not we had a couple that came out to the show today that said they specifically drove down just to see us and pick up a book to show their support. We are making a difference in peoples lives folks so please continue to spread the word. We still have over 3000 books to sell before the end of the year! I want to be able to write out large checks to Soldiers Angels, Wounded Warriors, Fisher House and the USO so please continue to support us by spreading the word to everyone you know and have conatct with! Thank you all for your support and to all our Creators that helped make this possible THANK YOU!

Well Today is Memorial Day. A time of reflection, a time of mixed emotions both sadness and joy. A time when we remember those that have Fallen for this country and our Freedom's. We should Never forget those that have given the ultimate sacrifice so that both you and I can live our day to day lives. Unfortunately to many people have forgotten what this day is really about. It's not just another day off work for an extended weekend, It's not about the barbecues and the Beer parties, It's not about the family gatherings all across the country. It is a day to REMEMBER our FALLEN! A day to show them the respect and honor they deserve in the remembrance of their sacrifice. They gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we can have our tomorrow. Today I will be laying a wreath on a memorial that was erected in honor of our Fallen! Not just about one individual but all those that have fallen in every war since the inception of this country.We as a people must Remember our Heroes both past and present. I ask that today at 11:00 am that you join me in a moment of silence to honor all those that have given their lives so that we can continue in ours. God Bless America and God Bless Our Troops. Thank you ! For all that have served.

A Special Message To a Father on this Fathers day!

Today is a day that many of us celebrate Fathers Day and show our dad's how much we love them. But on this Father's Day I find it somewhat somber,Because on this Father's Day a particular father is in my prayers and my thoughts as I attended the funeral procession of SPC Brian Michael Anderson " Bucky " as known by his friends and family. While I stood there and watched the young Heroes body coming home as the hearse passed I realized that on this particular Father's day Kenny Anderson saw his son return home but not in the way he had envisioned it. This particular Fathers Day Mr. Anderson would not be able to hold his son in his arms and tell him how much he loves him and how much he missed him or how proud he is of him . Because SPC Anderson was killed in Afghanistan on June 12th 2010. So from this day forward I am sure that Bucky's dad will will have some difficulty for some years to come to finsd it a joyous day as he once had I am sure. My heart goes out to the Anderson Family and their friends. I do not know what it must feel like to loose your son. I can barely grasp the full concept of it. But I do know that this family will need our prayers and our support. They say time heals all things. Well I am not sure about healing all things I am more sure that the pain from something like this just becomes a little less sharp. Thank you Bucky for your service to your country ! And Thank you Mr. & Mrs Anderson for raising such a fine young man, who left this world doing what he loved and believed in. In time sir I hope these wounds do heal.

"This goes out to all the Main Stream Comic Artist (Marvel/DC/Wildstorm/IDW/Dark Horse) Awhile back before I had my non-profit status, I asked several of you Pro's out there(Some of you are friends) if you all would be interested in helping me on a project to support our fallen and injured troops from the war.By donating a pin-up geared towards the theme of the Untold Stories from Iraq & Afghanistan Graphic Novel, Most of you agreed to do so. As of now I have received one Pin-up! Now I know you guys are busy and I mean busy your schedules are hectic I know. But If your still planing on donating a pin-up I really do need them ASAP! Now I know I asked you all to do this and I asked you to do it for our Troops who have been injured or who have fallen. To come together as an industry both Main Stream and Independent and Freelancer alike. If you have found you just cant do it just let me know so I can move on and see if I can find others that can. No hard feelings at all to anyone. See this isnt about me or making money its about a Marine who lost his leg to an IED, Its about A Soldier who never made it back home! It's about a Seaman that returned home to find his wife was divorcing him after three tours in Iraq! I am in need of people that have an interest in helping our troops and this project, that would be interested in donating funds to the "Untold Stories from Iraq Fund I have set up with BB&T in Broadway VA. to help offset the printing cost associated with the printing of the book which is $6,296.00 through Morgan Printing for 5000 books.This is to help our soldiers.! Frederick Pullin: Ohio-based writer His love for visual storytelling, though, makes the graphic novel his favored medium, and his work has found its way into projects in Europe and the UK. Frederick is also an experienced martial artist trained in both Japanese and Chinese styles, lending reality to his action sequences .When he isn’t writing, Frederick is in the classroom as a substitute teacher.

Chuck Bordell : Artist/Penciler/Inker was born a poor transistor farmer in the Rust Belt of western Pennsylvania. His childhood was filled with polluted rivers that he fell in love with anyway, the sound of railroad cars crashing together, and dreams of lusty women of dubious reputation. Eventually, he tired of all things iron and decided to trade rust for heavy metals, moving to Missoula, MT in 1987. Despite a decided lack of tree cover (comparatively speaking) he found Missoula to his liking and, after earning a degree in Archaeology in 1991, decided to stay and continue his quest for the world record two-headed trout. In the meantime, he discovered that he had some skill in telling stories through sequential art and has since worked for numerous comic book publishers, including Malibu Comics, Caliber Comics, Brainstorm Comics, Transfuzion, 01 Comics, Alpha Productions and Silverline Comics. Larry Hama: The LEGEND Himself LARRY HAMA has tentatively agreed to write the forward for the Soldier Graphic Novel Untold Stories From Iraq & Afghanistan after he and his lawyers review the final product ! Here is some information about Larry if you dont know who he is: Larry Hama (born 7 June 1949) is a Japanese American writer, artist, actor and musician who has worked in the fields of entertainment and publishing since the 1960s. He is best known as a writer and editor for Marvel Comics, where he wrote the licensed comic book series G.I. Joe, A Real American Hero, based on the Hasbro action figures. He has also written for the series Wolverine, Ninth Man: the Ultimate Ninja, and Elektra, and he created the character Bucky O’Hare, which was developed into a comic book, a toy line and a television cartoon. During the 1970s, he was seen in minor roles on the TV shows M*A*S*H and Saturday Night Live, and he appeared on Broadway in two roles in the original 1976 production of Stephen Sondheim’s Pacific Overtures.

Opcode Studios would like to help get this out on iTunes for sale to help raise money! We have our own comic application that will be built into the comic when people purchase. Jose Ivan Negron AKA Bad Attitude Ink is a cartoonist, currently living in Brooklyn, N.Y with his lovely wife, Rebecca and their cat, Shmucky. Jose has been drawing since he could pick up a pencil ( hey, no one said he drew good at that age, he was just drawing then , that's all )and hasn't stopped since. Except to indulge his addiction to video games.

He studied art at The High School Of Art And Design, in N.Y.C and graduated ultimately from Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, having won the Mark Rothko Art Scholarship that year, one of only ten students in NYC high schools to receive the scholarship yearly. He also took classes at the School Of Visual Arts and Parsons School Of Design on weekends and summer vacations. Yes....his friends did think he was nuts for going to school in the summer and on weekends. They quickly forgave him when they learned he got to draw naked girls in his life drawing classes.

Hey Everyone I am planning for Heroes Fallen Fundraiser for next year. My idea for next years event is to have a milblog conference(military blog) and comic book convention combined all of the proceeds from the event will go to support our Troops. I will have more details worked out in the coming months so please keep an eye out on this site for all updates.I will have my non-profit status by the time the event takes place so next years fundraiser should be much more successful than this years. MEMORIAL PLAQUE FOR SPC CODY GRATER

I have decided that I am going to scale back a bit on the printing of the Graphic Novel instead of doing a 5000 copy initial print run I am only going to do 1000 copies just so I can get the book out on the market in November as promised. Then as the book progresses in sales I will print more as needed. I have decided that this is the easiest way for me to get the book out their to help our soldiers. Also I am asking if anyone would like to donate to the Untold Stories from Iraq & Afghanistan Heroes Fallen fund you can make out a check or money order in any amount you feel comfortable with to " Untold Stories From Iraq Fund" the mailing address is 209 Atlantic Avenue Broadway VA. 22815. There will be a new mailing address possibly by the end of the month as I am moving to a new home. I will inform everyone of that change when it happens. Also I have decided to become a non-profit organization I will be filing articles of incorporation by the end of the month. And then I will file for my 501(c-3) status. I am seeking out a board of directors now. Anyway that is the latest about the Graphic Novel. Well everyone the Untold Stories from Iraq & Afghanistan Heroes Fallen Fundraiser did not go off as well as I had hoped it would, We were able to cover expenses and made a slight profit of $125.00 which has gone into the fund.But all those that were guest carried it out in a true patriotic fashion and made the best of what we had.! I would like to thank all of my comic creator guest Michael W. Kellar, Scott Rorie, Sean Taylor They were fantastic and truly generous professionals! 1Sgt Troy Steward did a fantastic job speaking about his time in Afghanistan and his presentation for the Spc Cody C. Grater Memorial Tribute was heart felt and touching! All of my volunteers that were their worked very hard and I would like to thank them as well for putting so much of themselves into the fundraiser.The Bands that played at the fundraiser throughout the day were fantastic and even though we had very little turnout they played as if the place was packed!Thank you to Republican delegate Matt Lorr for attending the Fundraiser and showing his support of our military. Also Thank you to Becky Turner for donating the food for our concessions.I learned a lot from promoting this event and I am hopeful future events will meet with much more success! Again Thank You to everyone involved in the event! And if I missed anyone on the list Thank you !

Well the time is quickly approaching for the Fundraiser on June 13th at Broadway High School in Broadway VA. I just wanted to update a few things Some which are good and some of which are disappointing. First off lets start with the disappointing news :

1) Due to some unforeseen circumstances a few of our scheduled guest will not be appearing and they are as follows:

A) Actors William Jones & Robert Harris from the Movie Cabin Fever (will not be attending)

B) First Sgt C.J.Grisham (will not be attending)

C) Actor Brian J. Krause (may not be able to make it)

D) Artist Will Torres (will not be attending)

E) SPC Cody C. Grater's Mother Anita Lewis (will not be able to attend) the fundraiser as she was unable to get transportation. And I was unable to provide it for her. I will be mailing her the Memorial Plaque we have had made for her in honor of her sons service.

G) New Army Recruit Swearing in ceremony has been canceled

There are a few functions that I will not have on this new site until I figure out how do go about getting them set-up. But I feel the functionality for this site is much better and also feel that we will get more exposure here. Program seeks to help you pen your war story

The Army is sorting through a mound of problems after almost eight years of war. Thanks to an English instructor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, writer’s block will not be one of them.

A program called “Telling War Stories” is going on the road this summer to several posts to encourage soldiers to write about their experiences.

The Army Center for Professional and Military Ethics is supporting a series of writing-orientation pizza lunches at educational centers and Warrior Transition Units at seven locations.

“These workshops are opportunities for would-be authors to learn more about the project and to share their narratives,” said Capt. Michael Warren, who came up with the idea for the writers workshops last summer.

West Point plebes review writing projects by soldiers about their time at war. The soldiers get help with writing style, composition and getting started with an idea, or just a second opinion on something they’ve done.

Last year, the English Department received 10 stories from six authors by soliciting works through the media and Army Web sites.

Now the show is going on the road to encourage more participants.

Soldiers are welcome to bring their projects to the orientation sessions, where they can learn more about writing and obtain points of contact in the English 101 Composition Course. Feedback will come at the beginning of calendar year 2010, Warren said, and if there are enough entries he hopes to get them published.

At the WTUs, soldiers’ stories will be videotaped for West Point’s ongoing Oral History Project.

Richard Sherman: Sherman began his career as an editorial cartoonist at the age of eleven, drawing for the school papers in both junior high and high school. At fifteen Sherman was hired as the staff cartoonist for the Elgin Daily Herald.
After High School Sherman enlisted with the US Navy where he contributed to an array of Navy publications including shipboard and command newspapers, periodicals and magazines.
Following a hiatus from editorial cartooning, Sherman returned to the editorial scene in 2001. As a freelance cartoonist Sherman was regularly published in the Freeport Journal Standard, Freeport iNK, the Sauk Valley News, and the Monroe Times. Sherman has also contributed to the Rockford Register Star, the Peoria Journal Star, the Janesville Gazette, the Quad City Times, the Times Courier, and the Journal Gazette.

Jeffery Osgood: A 49 years old and a Navy Veteran, having served on the USS Enterprise from 1980-84. Working in the comic book industry on a part time basis since around 1998 or so, having done work for companies such as Angel Entertainment, Revisionary Press, Blue Monkey Comics, Acclaim Comics, AC Comics, and most recently, Javier Lugo graphics.

Scott Rorie: is a free-lance artist originally from Monroe , NC . Learning to draw at an early age, Scott won his first art show at 11 years old, when he won a school wide art show. After studying art all through high school, he attended Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte , NC majoring in Advertising Design. Although Scott works in many different media, his main stay is the airbrush. Like many airbrush artists, Scott started out painting T-shirts, but eventually moved on to canvas and illustration board. Scott's work can be found in homes from Maine to California , as well as Germany . Some of Scott's past clients include: Kane Hodder (Jason from Friday the 13th), Gunnar Hanson (Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Vernon Wells (Wez from Road Warrior), Elizabeth Grayson (from TV's Highlander), Barbara Leigh (Vampirella cover model), Barbie Blake (Penthouse model) and Peter Betz, a German businessman, who sold some of Scott's work through a friends gallery in Germany . His past awards include a 1st and 2nd Place Award at the Chiller Theatre Show in NJ, "Best Black and White" at Nexus in Orlando, FL, and "Best Mono-Chrome" and " Best Horror" at DragonCon. He has been published in Cavewoman from Basement Comics, Didymous from Iron Horse Comics, Con-Tour Magazine, and Architectural Digest and more recently, "Night” from Jester's Press in Charlotte, NC.

Scott Nicholson: Writer/Editor/Boone, NC, author Scott Nicholson has published novels, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction magazine articles, and has written five screenplays. As a newspaper reporter, he's won three North Carolina Press Association awards. He's had the usual collection of odd jobs: dishwasher, carpenter, painter, musician, baseball card dealer, and radio announcer. Now he haphazardly trades words for beans and uses "haphazardly" as often as possible. Nicholson’s first novel “The Red Church,” inspired by legends surrounding a haunted Appalachian church near his home, was a Stoker Award finalist and an alternate selection of the Mystery Guild. “The Harvest” is an alien infection tale that’s an allegory for the development of the mountains. “The Manor” is set at a haunted artists’ retreat in the Appalachian Mountains and has been optioned for film development.Nicholson has published about 60 stories in six different countries, including the collection “Thank You For The Flowers.

Wilson Ramos Jr.: Wilson Ramos is a Comic Book colorist who's worked on such titles as Wolverine, Thor, Deadpool and Spider-Woman to name a few. Besides his digital color work, Wilson is also a letterer of many Japanese comics (Manga) and Korean comics (Mahwah). He has lettered for such companies as Central Park Media, Media Blasters and Del Ray books. He works for Wildstorm / DC Comics’ Manga imprint called CMX. His work experience includes 10 years at Marvel Comics and was the Art Director for Committed Comics. In 2002, he was nominated for Squiddie award for coloring. His most recent projects includes coloring and lettering “Zoom Suit” for Assassination Entertainment as well as coloring the comic “7 Days to Fame” for After Hours Press. He begins digital painting a new book this summer called The Mercury Chronicles. In his spare time Wilson works on his own comic books, as well as participates in a weekly comic club, where he shares his insight of the comic industry to new and up and coming artist.

Michael Hudson: Artist /President Reel Art Studios I have been involved in the art world for the past 29 years. My first interest was in cartooning, having grown up on a steady diet of comic books and movies, but life has a funny way of throwing curve balls and since I couldn't be either one of my heroes, Wally Wood or Errol Flynn, I ended up somehow as an accomplished landscape and portrait painter. I never got over my love of comics, pulps and movies from the silents to the Bs and a few years ago found myself longing to be a part of that culture. Larry Hama: The LEGEND Himself LARRY HAMA has agreed to write the forward for the Soldier Graphic Novel Untold Stories From Iraq!Here is some information about Larry if you dont know who he is: Larry Hama (born 7 June 1949) is a Japanese American writer, artist, actor and musician who has worked in the fields of entertainment and publishing since the 1960s. He is best known as a writer and editor for Marvel Comics, where he wrote the licensed comic book series G.I. Joe, A Real American Hero, based on the Hasbro action figures. He has also written for the series Wolverine, Ninth Man: the Ultimate Ninja, and Elektra, and he created the character Bucky O’Hare, which was developed into a comic book, a toy line and a television cartoon. During the 1970s, he was seen in minor roles on the TV shows M*A*S*H and Saturday Night Live, and he appeared on Broadway in two roles in the original 1976 production of Stephen Sondheim’s Pacific Overtures.

One of the soldiers I have been speaking to is presently stationed in Afghanistan. His name is SPC Robert Soto .He and his unit were attacked earlier this month at the Korangal River in ALIABAD, Afghanistan .His fellow comrade PrivateFirst Class Richard A.Dewater was KIA . PFC Richard A. Dewater, 21, of Topeka, Kan., died April 15, of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device, while on a dismounted patrol near Korengal Valley, Afghanistan. This is an update on a new Film " Brothers At War" is an intimate portrait of an American family during a turbulent time. Grater the Fallen Hero from the war in 2007 That we are doing a Tribute for in the Graphic Novel, will be coming to the fundraiser to accept a Memorial Plaque from us in memory of his Bravery and Service to his country! After many negative responses and comments from soldiers and others I have decided to change one of the charities that was to receive donations from the selling of the Graphic Novel to help the soldiers. The new charity that will receive funds now will be http://www.fisherhouse.org/

I must do what is in the best interest of the Graphic Novel being done to support the soldiers . So therefore I had to make this decision. I can not allow any negativity to be associated with the book. This action I feel is in the best interest of the book so as to help our Brave men and women.
